Alot to sea
Kirk Holland (at right), a board member for the Santa Monica Aquarium and science teacher at SMASH, gets assistance from Mickel Benzimra, a public program docent for the aquarium, as he lowers a remote operational vehicle into the ocean for its maiden voyage during the aquarium’s ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ event on Sunday April 30, 2006. ‘The ROV — a surface operated submarine— is an inexpensive way to explore the ocean,’ Holland said. ‘It cost $200 to build with parts from Home Depot.’

Spray and wash
\
David Dade, 6, sprays water onto the ‘Watershed Diorama’ on Saturday at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, as part of the Earth Day-Ocean Pollution Workshop. The diorama, which was custom made for Heal the Bay by Andrew C.Aguilar, is designed for pollution education and to illustrate stormwater runoff. Dade gives it a spritz under the watchful eyes of Vicki Wawerchak, the aquarium’s director, and Heal the Bay volunteer David Lloyd.
