Shop ’til It Stops

Laura Leighton of "Melrose Place" and Tim Gunn of "Project Runway" walk through the symbolic exhibit "Tunnel of Hope" with domestic violence survivors Kathryn and Dallas from Sojourm, a Los Angeles-area domestic violence shelter, during Marshalls annual Shop ’til It Stops campaign at the Third Street Promenade  on Thursday, October 1, 2009.  The exhibit, which is comprised of six unique arches, features information about the cause, the names of the many organizations who have worked tirelessly to put an end to domestic violence and celebrity audio messages of support from Jennifer Love Hewitt, Joe Torre, Rosie Perez, Martina McBride, Vivica Fox, Robin Givens, Chaka Khan, Michael Bolton, and more….  Buying a pair of shoes at any Marshalls store between October 1 and 15, 2009 will benefit the Hotline. As part of the Marshalls Shop ’til It Stops program, $1 will be donated to the National Domestic Violence Hotline for each pair of shoes sold during this period (up to $150,000). For the last 15 years Marshalls has been committed to the prevention of domestic violence. Since the programs inception, more than $1 million has been donated to this important cause. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

St. Baldrick's

(above) Santa Monica Fire Marshal Jim Glew (left) and SMFD Captain Jeff Connor  get their head shaved by Vidal Sassoon Academy students during a St. Baldrick's Day.

St. Baldrick's is the world's largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research. Thousands of volunteers shave their heads in solidarity of children with cancer, while requesting donations of support from friends and family.

How it all started. In 1999, Tim Kenny challenged friends, John Bender and Enda McDonnell to find a way to give back to society. These three reinsurance executives turned their industry's St. Patrick's Day party into a benefit for kids with cancer. What could they do to really turn the heads - and the wallets - of their colleagues?  John suggested shaving Enda's head since kids typically lose their hair during cancer treatment. "People will gladly pay to see you bald, Enda!" Never one to miss an opportunity, Enda replied, "I will if you will," and St. Baldrick's was born.  The three planned to raise "$17,000 on the 17th," recruiting 17 colleagues to raise $1,000 each to be shorn. Instead, the first St. Baldrick's.
