Russ Mullen and the Jazz Associates

Russ Mullen and the Jazz Associates perform during City of Santa Monica's 3rd Annual Jazz on the Lawn on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at City Hall. Mullen has not only excelled as a musician, but also as a teacher and inspiration to youth in Santa Monica. He teaches full-time at John Adams Middle School and directs the John Adams Middle School Jazz Band and Jazz Workshop in Santa Monica – work for which he has been honored by the California State Legislature and the City of Santa Monica. A natural talent, Mullen started playing the piano when he was four years old, the trumpet in junior high and he taught himself the other brass instruments shortly thereafter. By the time he was in high school he was playing professionally.

In June 1964, Peter & Gordon became the very first British Invasion act after The Beatles to take the number one spot on the American charts with "A World Without Love." Dubbed the "Everly Brothers of the British Invasion," Peter & Gordon scored Top 40 hits with "I Don't Want to see you Again," "Nobody I Know" and "Woman" - all written by Paul McCartney - plus "Knight in Rusty Armor," "Sunday For Tea" "I Go to Pieces" "Lady Godiva" "To Know You is to Love You" and "True Love Ways." (ABOVE) Legendary 60's folk singer and songwriter, Joan Baez gives an impromptu performance with Peter and Gordon on The Santa Monica Pier Thursday. Baez has performed publicly for nearly 50 years, releasing over 30 albums and recorded songs in at least eight languages.

Gerry & the Pacemakers


Gerry & the Pacemakers perform at the Santa Monica Pier during the 24th Annual Twilight Dance Series on Thursday, August 14, 2008. Gerry & the Pacemakers came from the same Liverpool scene at the Cavern that spawned the "Mersey Beat." One of the top Liverpool beat groups of the early 1960s, Gerry and the Pacemakers followed the Beatles and many other British music groups on the "British Invasion" of 1964. Remembered for such hits as "I'm The One," their biggest U.S. hit "Don't Let the Sun Catch you Crying" and "Ferry Cross the Mersey," which became the title of a touching and beautiful film homage to their home town. Gerry & the Pacemakers were TV regulars on The Ed Sullivan Show, Hullabaloo, Shindig, Ready Steady Go! and featured in the legendary TNT/T.A.M.I. Show concert.

Argentian folk-electronic musician Juana Molina performs at the Santa Monica Pier during the 24th Annual Twilight Dance Series on Thursday, August 14, 2008. Molina started her career in 1988 as a comedic television actress in Argentina on the show La Noticia Rebelde. She later starred in Juana y sus hermanas, a hit sketch show across the Spanish-speaking world, for which she remains better known in Latin America.
