Kirk Holland (at right), a board member for the Santa Monica Aquarium and science teacher at SMASH, gets assistance from Mickel Benzimra, a public program docent for the aquarium, as he lowers a remote operational vehicle into the ocean for its maiden voyage during the aquarium’s ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ event on Sunday April 30, 2006. ‘The ROV — a surface operated submarine— is an inexpensive way to explore the ocean,’ Holland said. ‘It cost $200 to build with parts from Home Depot.’

David Dade, 6, sprays water onto the ‘Watershed Diorama’ on Saturday at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, as part of the Earth Day-Ocean Pollution Workshop. The diorama, which was custom made for Heal the Bay by Andrew C.Aguilar, is designed for pollution education and to illustrate stormwater runoff. Dade gives it a spritz under the watchful eyes of Vicki Wawerchak, the aquarium’s director, and Heal the Bay volunteer David Lloyd.

Dog Day afternoon; Class # 7 Graduates from  the K9 Connection show off their dogs skills during their graduation ceremony that was staged at Lincoln Middle School on Friday, April 7, 2006. The K9 Connection is a project bringing together dogs and at risk teens. The class encourages youths to apply the lessons learned in training homeless sheltered dogs to their lives, developing an awareness of impulsive behavior.

On Saturday, at the new Main Library, noted authors and collectors of Barbie, Joe Blitman and Priscilla Wardlow, give an appraisal on this Barbie of $250.00 for a guest at the Barbie lecture. Blitman and Wardlow, shared their expertise about the world of Barbie doll collecting and gave appraisals to the audience who had brought in their Barbie's.
