INDEPENDENCE DAY

(1) Honorary Grand Marshal Santa Monica Fire Chief Jim Hone leads the Third Annual Fourth of July Parade down Main Street in Santa Monica on July 4, 2009. The hometown parade was presented by the Ocean Park Association. (2) Santa Monica Council Member Robert Holdbrook drives his Model T down Main Street with his wife Jean Ann and fellow Santa Monica Council Member Bobby Shriver during the Independence Day parade. (3) Participants from Liberty Tax Services represent the Statue of Liberty. (4) Members of the Lighthouse Church walk down Main Street during the Parade. (5) The Santa Monica High School Marching Band performs during the Parade. (6, 7) The SMPD Mounted Police Unit ride their horses down Main Street. (8,9) Kids ride scooters, skate boards and bicycles in the parade. (10) Art verge and his son from Westside Rentals wave to the crowd. (11) Mrs. California, Lisa McCumber Gandara waves to the crowd. (12) Spring de Haviland and Dr. Bernard Harris ride in a 1927 Bugatti. (13) Participants dress in patriotic red, white and blue. (14) Historian and Author Jim Harris, who wrote the book on the iconic Santa Monica Pier’s 100-year survival, carries a banner during the Third Annual Fourth of July Parade. (15) Children enjoy the parade.

Let there be Light

Rabbi Eli Levitansky, 28, from the Chabad House,  lights the giant Menorah and gives a blessing  at the Third Street Promenade during the first night of Chanukah on Sunday , December 21, 2008. Chanukah, AKA the Festival of Lights, is a joyous celebration of the victory of the Maccabees and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. It also commemorates the miracle of the oil that burned for 8 days when there was only enough oil left in the temple for one day.
