Roxanne Shelby teaches Middle Eastern Dance to Santa Monica College students on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. Shelby taught the students a variety of Middle Eastern dances, including Dabke from the Levantine region, Khaleeji from the Arabian Gulf, and an overview of several Egyptian folk dances, including what is commonly called “Belly Dance” in the West. Shelby is the founder of JuzurArts, an organization dedicated to the preservation and education of the art of Middle Eastern Dance.

This eco-facility is an opportunity for the entire SMC community to participate in experiential learning, to grow their own food, to practice sustainability, and to better understand food systems and the impact they have on our planet, bodies, and culture.

Congratulation to the Santa Monica College student recycling team for winning the SMC EcoHero Award on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. The recycling team was recognized for or their work in supporting the Organic Learning Garden and implementing the “Green Zones at SMC,” which will use all electrical equipment and organic integrated pest management, and for its efforts in implementing SMC’s Zero Waste program and maintaining SMC’s recycling system.
