MASTER DANCE CLASS
Roxanne Shelby teaches Middle Eastern Dance to Santa Monica College students on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. Shelby taught the students a variety of Middle Eastern dances, including Dabke from the Levantine region, Khaleeji from the Arabian Gulf, and an overview of several Egyptian folk dances, including what is commonly called “Belly Dance” in the West. Shelby is the founder of JuzurArts, an organization dedicated to the preservation and education of the art of Middle Eastern Dance.




TWO GREEN THUMBS
Master Gardener and English Professor Dana Morgan demonstrates how to save seeds from heirloom tomatoes during “Saving & Planting Heirloom Seeds” gardening workshop at Santa Monica College’s Organic Learning Garden on Thursday, September 6, 2012. The students learned how to clean, dry, and store seeds for planting next spring.
This eco-facility is an opportunity for the entire SMC community to participate in experiential learning, to grow their own food, to practice sustainability, and to better understand food systems and the impact they have on our planet, bodies, and culture.





Soul Train
Santa Monica College Associated Students & SMC Black Collegians attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the Largest Soul Train Line at Santa Monica College during Club Row on Thursday, May 3, 2012. The annual event is designed for many clubs at SMC to recruit members and raise funds. Club participants set up colorful booths across the Library Walkway, where they discussed their activities to prospective members and attract a multitude of students with promises of food and prizes. The event turns out new club devotees and at least a spark of interest in many others.

THE GREEN TEAM:
Congratulation to the Santa Monica College student recycling team for winning the SMC EcoHero Award on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. The recycling team was recognized for or their work in supporting the Organic Learning Garden and implementing the “Green Zones at SMC,” which will use all electrical equipment and organic integrated pest management, and for its efforts in implementing SMC’s Zero Waste program and maintaining SMC’s recycling system. Students left to right are: Yang Haosong, 23; Han Dongwei, 21; Deandre McDade, 20; Junyang Liu,21; and Yan Chen Lia, 23.

Weiner is a veteran foreign correspondent for National Public Radio. His book explores the notion of happiness around the globe and across diverse cultures
