Santa Monica Firefighters walk down a candle -lit hallway at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel during World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) 'Earth Hour 2009,' on Saturday, March 28, 2009. Earth Hour is a global WWF climate change initiative. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities were invited to turn out their lights for one hour (Earth Hour) on Saturday March 28, 2009 at 8:30 p.m. to show their support for action on climate change. The event began in Sydney in 2007, when 2 million people switched off their lights. In 2008, more than 50 million people, including several Fairmont hotels around the globe, participated. In 2009, Earth Hour aims to reach out to 1 billion people in 1,000 cities.




SuperBowl-A-Thon XIII

Nearly 500 bowlers on teams representing various businesses, social service agencies and local government participated in the SuperBowl-A-Thon bringing together the private and public sector in an effort to eradicate homelessness in Santa Monica and transform the community. It benefits the Westside Shelter & Hunger Coalition’s efforts to strengthen services to homeless and at-risk, men, women and families through education, advocacy and service coordination.

Firehouse gourmet
Santa Monica Firefighter, Johnny Maccini, buys rice to cook dinner for his fellow firefighters in station 2 on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at Albertsons Grocery store. Maccini will prepare a classic fire department recipe, Caribbean Pork Cutlets with black beansand rice accompanied with a tomato and onion salad and tortillas. Each day a different firefighter must grocery shop and prepare lunch and dinner for the station's firefighters. The chef of the day collects $15..00 in the morning from his fellow firefighters to purchase the groceries for the two meals. While some firefighter/chefs are better cooks than others, Maccini says, "I haven't received any complains about my cooking...yet!"

(4) Nick Angel, 27, collects donations on Friday. The money supports the local MDA clinic and support groups, assists with the purchase of durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, leg braces, and communication devices, and funds the MDA Summer Camps.
