Laurel Rosen, President/CEO of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce presents Macerich's Santa Monica Place Marketing Manager Ashley Walkley with the Business Cares award on Tuesday, February 12, 2009, for their outstanding service to the community by working to end homelessness. Macerich encourages its employees to volunteer at various non-profit organizations that benefit each Town Center concept of being the social heart of their community. Each full-time employee receives a volunteer time bank of an aggregate of 24 hours a year to volunteer at the non-profit organizations. Bob Aptaker, Macerich executive vice president of development, gives an update on statues of the  550,000-square-foot mall's remodeling operation during a behind-the-scenes construction tour at Santa Monica Place on Thursday, February 12, 2009. The design takes the roof off the central portion of the current mall to provide for open-air walkways and spacious public gathering areas. Nordstrom and Bloomingdales will anchor the mall as its only department stores. Santa Monica Place is scheduled to reopen in mid 2010.

It's a wrap

Community leaders, volunteers from the Police Activities League (PAL), Bayside District Corporation and Santa Monica Place, wrapped more than 250 gifts which were collected during the Winterlit “Best Gift Ever” community gift drive. Gifts collected will be distributed this Saturday at PAL to children who might otherwise go without presents this holiday season.

Demolition Kicks Off at Santa Monica Place: 1) Construction crews bring down the 1980s-era “Santa Monica Place” sign on Thursday. March 17, 2008. The Santa Monica Place sign crashed down and created a highly visual feat of pyrotechnic de-construction.2) (left to right) Randy Brant, Vice President from Macerich, Mayor Pro Tem Richard Bloom, and City Manager Lamont Ewell hit the demolition button. 3) Santa Monica City Manager Lamont Ewell gives a welcoming speech. 4,5) The UCLA marching band plays along the Third Street Promenade. 6) The crowed watches the firework show. 7) Construction crews survey the aftermath. ~ This high-profile event launches the 18-month process of creating the new, all open-air recycling of the old shopping mall, which closed in January and is scheduled to open as the new Santa Monica Place in fall 2009. Sustainability and green-building practices are a key part of the project’s design and construction. The new Santa Monica Place will be a fresh, modern, three-level retail and dining destination, with a signature, rooftop dining deck with great views of the ocean.
