Marionette Matinee

Five puppets watch a 12 minute film at the  Santa Monica Museum of Art   as part of 'The Puppet Show' exhibition on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. The art installation is by  artist Phillippe Parreno, Untitled (Ventriloquist performs #1), 2005, Ceramic Puppets, Paint, Fabric, Stuffing and 16 mm Black and White Film Transferred to DVD, 12 Minute.  The Puppet Show installation includes works by participating artists as well as a collection of historic puppets, who are housed in Puppet Storage—the exhibition's simultaneous entry and “backstage” or unconsciousness. The Puppet Show is organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania. It is co-curated by Ingrid Schaffner, ICA Senior curator, and Carin Kuoni, Director. The exhibition runs through August 9th at Bergamot Station

SMC Music and Theatre Arts students performs a program of solos, duets, and ensemble selections from the musical theatre genre during the SMC Musical Theatre Workshop on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Theatre Arts Studio Stage. The musical theatre workshop was directed by Terrin Adair-Lynch and the musical director was Frank Turner.

(above) Kindergarten students from Overland Elementary school, many of who's first time to see a live play, stretch during the intermission.The Morgan-Wixson partners with SMMUSD Visual and Performing Arts to present school shows and introduce kids to the wonders of live theatre. The Hundred Dresses is a 1944 children's book by Eleanor Estes. The book is about Wanda Petronski, a poor and friendless Polish-American girl. Her teacher, outwardly kind, puts her in the worst seat in the schoolroom and does not intervene when her schoolmates tease her mercilessly. One day, after her classmates laugh and tease her over the faded blue dress she wears to school every day, Wanda claims to own one hundred dresses. The story follows these students as they learn a lesson about their moral values when faced with prejudice.

1) Puppeteer and puppet builder,  Steve Meltzer, 54, and his longtime partner Fred, who he built in 1971, perform to a sold-out house during his  one-man show "Puppetolio"  at the Santa Monica Puppet & Magic Center on Saturday, January 5, 2008. 2) Meltzer performs a skit with Ida.  3) Meltzer has Elmer juggle balls during the show. 4) Meltzer's puppet collection adorn the theatre.  5) Santa Monica Puppet & Magic Center  is located at 1014 Broadway in Santa Monica.
