Layla Lane

Singer-songwriter Heday and award-winning pianist Valerie Stern of Layla Lane perform at  the Santa Monica Farmers Market on Sunday, February 13, 2011.

Layla Lane is a band that dazzlingly embraces the rock genre, cutting through it with a vintage edge and a sprinkling of gypsy swing. Utilizing an abundance of instruments from across the musical spectrum, Layla Lane consistently showcases the ability to not only capture the imagination of the casual music listener but also to intrigue the most intense of enthusiasts.

Perhaps this is due to the unique influence of both classical music and rock implemented into each recording. Or perhaps it is the depth and emotion in the melodies that come spilling out to the listener, stemming from precise efforts to place each note in its proper place. Whatever it may be, the result is a crystal-clear sort of pop that brings listeners back to what was and forward to what may be.

The Tuffingtons

The Tuffingtons - Images by Fabian Lewkowicz

The Tuffingtons perform at the Santa Monica Farmers Market on Sunday, January 9, 2011. The Tuffingtons are a six-piece unit made up of native Angelenos, who have created their own blend of ska and disco, with a couple nods to bands like Television, Madness and Buzzcocks. They have called their music everything from AM punk to island-arena rock. The Tuffingtons are gaining a reputation for their live shows, which usually consist of something like animal ‘sacrifice’, and there is a very lifelike and life-size puppet. Their shows are better experienced than explained. Their debut full-length record, produced by Jacob Bercovici AKA Mr. Sandwiches (Warpaint, The Lady Tigra) will be out in the spring. Their current EP Egregious will be released this summer.

The Buffalo Skinners

The Buffalo Skinners, who are here visiting from Scarborough - North Yorkshire, England, perform at the Santa Monica Downtown Farmers Market on Wednesday, September 22, 2010.

The Buffalo Skinners are a 5-piece folk group. All are students at the University of Hull Scarborough Campus. Being plaid and denim enthusiasts, the boys list their influences as ‘The Felice Brothers, The Band, Bob Dylan, Levi’s, and whiskey.’ This is clearly reflected in the music they play. Covering old gospel songs and getting people moving is what they're all about. Howlin’ Peter Seccombe hails from the rugged underworld of Manchester and is a vocalist and guitar picker. Accordion boy Lawrence Menard is all the way from Southern California and traveled here especially to play American folk music… in Scarborough. Robbie Thompson, from Sheffield, decided he needed a break from the gym and gave his fingers a real workout on the bass guitar. Joe Thornton, also from Sheffield, is the drummer of the band. Whether it's cow skins or public doorways, he will drum on anything. James Nicholls usually resides in Leeds and has mastered his craft of fiddling on the rooftops.
