Gingerbread City

Guests admire the “Gingerbread City” during Fairmont Miramar Hotel's 9th Annual “Meet Me Under the Fig Tree” event on Sunday, December 6, 2009. The Gingerbread City was constructed from 400 pounds of gingerbread and 200 pounds of sugar.

Celebrating Success





(1) Two-time Golden Globe nominee and humanitarian, Wendie Malick, honors Victoria Rios, a previously homeless individual, during the Westside Shelter & Hunger Coalition 13th annual Celebrating Success breakfast at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica on Friday, October 17, 2008. The Westside Shelter & Hunger Coalition's Celebrating Success breakfast honnord 22 previously homeless individuals who have journeyed their lives from desolation to hope. The Westside Shelter & Hunger Coalition is a group of over thirty social service providers, faith congregations, and supporting organizations committed to ending homelessness through service coordination, public education, and advocacy. The Coalition members work together to provide a continuum of care for homeless, low-income individuals and their families by serving their needs in a cost effective and cooperative manner. They have built an infrastructure that serves the needs of the many sub-groups of the homeless population including veterans, battered women, youth, families and individuals with mental illness, drug or alcohol addiction, and/or HIV/AIDS.

(4) The Santa Monica College Vocal Jazz Ensemble sing holiday songs under the Moreton Bay Fig Tree. (5)  Lead vocalist Arden Kaywin from  "The Fig Tree 5" gives a festive performance. The Fairmont Miramar Hotel continues the tradition of hosting an annual community gathering under the magnificent Moreton Bay Fig Tree.  Over 100 years old and standing 80-feet high with a breathtaking 120-foot network of branches, the fig tree has been a welcoming symbol of hospitality to all. The “Gingerbread City” featured with some of the “homes” being decorated by the local elementary schools in the neighborhood.  The community casted their vote on the best “home” with the winning school receiving a special holiday lunch at their school, provided by Executive Chef Jean-Claude Plihon and his culinary team.  Holiday treats, beverages, and local entertainment was enjoyed in the porte cochere area.
