The 58th annual Santa Monica Christmas Nativity Scene. (Abridged Version)  Due to a lottery imposed by the City of Santa Monica, only three nativity scene of the customary 14 nativity scenes remain on displayed at Palisades Park this year. Most of the remaining spaces have been claimed by out of town atheist groups.

The annual Santa Monica Nativity Scene was an annual display of the Christmas story which has been staged at Palisades Park since 1953. The interdenominational display used to stretch along Ocean Avenue from Arizona Avenue to Santa Monica Boulevard and included 14 scenes with life-size figures depicting events surrounding Christ’s birth staged by 13 local churches and the Santa Monica Police Officers Association.

WINTER SOLSTICE

The sun  can be seen setting through Baile Oakes' interactive wood sculpture entitled "Gestation III," 1991, marking the winter solstice at Palisades Park on Monday, December 21, 2009. The winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The sun appears at its lowest point in the sky, Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied from culture to culture, but most cultures have held a recognition of rebirth, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations around that time.

Chanukah in Santa Monica

Menachem Levitansky, a Rabbi Student from the Chabad House, lights the giant public Menorah at Palisades Park during the last night of Chanukah on Friday, December 18, 2009.  Chanukah, AKA the Festival of Lights, is a joyous celebration of the victory of the Maccabees and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. It also commemorates the miracle of the oil that burned for 8 days when there was only enough oil left in the temple for one day.

TREE HUGING DAY

Tree-Hugging Day organizers say they believe in thinking globally and acting locally, but think it would be very positive if participation branches out beyond Santa Monica. They also say they are very appreciative of the letters of support they have received from the Santa Monica Board of Education and the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees as well as the Santa Monica City Mayoral Commendation. Tree-Hugging Day was sponsored by the Alliance for Survival peace and environmental group.
