An American Tragedy

Baritone Chad Sloan, in the lead role of Clyde Griffiths, and soprano  Shana Blake Hill, in the role of Roberta, perform during Santa Monica College Opera Theatre's  West Coast premiere of the critically acclaimed “An American Tragedy,” featuring a professional cast at The Broad Stage on Saturday, May 8, 2010.
.
Based on Theodore Dreiser’s classic American novel – a complex account of the life and death of a young antihero named Clyde Griffiths – the opera was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and was performed there in 2005. With music by Tobias Picker and libretto by Gene Scheer, the opera has not received a staging since.

“Santa Monica College Opera Theatre has the unique distinction of not only presenting the West Coast Premiere of ‘An American Tragedy,’ but the students will have the privilege of working with Tobias Picker as he will be composer-in-residence for the week of May 2 through 9,” said Gail Gordon, SMC Opera Theatre artistic director.

Sloan is a graduate of the Juilliard School who has performed throughout the country with such companies as Wolf Trap Opera, Kentucky Opera, Utah Opera and Tanglewood. He is quickly becoming recognized as much for his warm, elegant vocalism as he is for deft interpretations of diverse characters.
Hill has appeared as a principal artist with such companies as The Los Angeles Opera, Savonlinna Festival Opera (Finland), and Cincinnati Opera. She has also been featured as a solo artist with orchestras such as The Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Colorado Symphony. She has also been featured in films, including the title track “The Mission” for the blockbuster film “The Sum of All Fears.”

Critics have praised “An American Tragedy.”  The Philadelphia Inquirer said “Picker’s score contains lush, singable, flowing music.” The New York Post said the opera is “a compelling mix of sex, religion and status” and that “Picker’s music has power.” And The Financial Times said “’An American Tragedy’ may be the perfect modern opera for people who hate modern opera.”
.
The Emmy Award-winning SMC Opera Theatre has gained an impressive reputation over the years. Several alumni have gone on to international careers, most notably Gabriel Silva and Rodel Rosell, who debuted at the Met in New York last October.

ON WINGS OF SONGS

Tenor Alek Shrader, 28, performs Liszt's William Tell songs and folk songs from the British Isles during his recital at the Broad Stage on Sunday, April 11, 2010. Keun-A Lee accompanies Shrader on the piano.

PETRUSHKA

Acclaimed puppeteer/Director Basil Twist explains to students how the Marionette is operated by the three puppeteers during an Arts Insights Education and Outreach Program of Petrushka at the Broad Stage on Friday, February 5, 2010.

Igor Stravinsky's ballet "Petrushka" is the tale of a traditional Russian puppet who comes to life and vies with his rival The Moor for the love of a Ballerina. At its debut in 1911, the world was rocked by Stravinsky's innovative music - discordant, bitonal and new.

Puppeteer and Director Basil Twist puts a whole new...er...twist on the story. Instead of human dancers playing puppets who come to life - why not have puppets play puppets? The puppets fly, dance, and float in midair.

Accompanied by Stravinsky's music scored for two pianos, the result is incredible.

Petrushka runs through Sunday Feb 7. Ticket information http://www.thebroadstage.com/

The 2009-2010 season spans 81 performance, between September 2009 and May 2010, and includes Broadway and theatre, as well as the return of chamber music, jazz, world music, baroque, dance, opera/voice; and family and educational programs. Legendary Mikhail Baryshnikov will be opening the Second Season of The Broad Stage with a tour de force performance of unforgettable artistry and passion. Joined by prima ballerina Ana Laguna, the program features two U.S. premieres of dances by Alexei Ratmansky and Benjamin Millepied.

“The Broad Stage is a place where emerging artists may play large, and established artists may play small,” explains Dustin Hoffman, Chair, Artistic Advisory Committee, “where exploration of the edge is encouraged and supported, and the community experiences art outside the rails of commerciality.”

“Our mission is to bring established and emerging performing artists from all over the world and give them the freedom to do what they do best,” adds Dale Franzen. “The artists have responded brilliantly! For 2009-2010, our second season, we’ve added Theater, Jazz, Opera, World Music, and Broadway series and greatly increased the number of performances on both our stages from 40 to 81. There’s excitement surrounding our sophomore season, with opening night and open-air parties, free community concerts and legendary artists stepping out in ways we rarely, if ever, see. On top of that, we’ve got a free parking lot, ticket prices as low as $20 and ocean breezes,” says Franzen.
