Chief is Santa Monica
Maryann Powell, Chair of the Board for the Santa Monica Convention & Visitors
Bureau, awards Santa Monica Police Chief Timothy J. Jackman with the 'I am Santa Monica' certificate and
declares him an official 'Santa Monica Ambassador' on Thursday, August 28,
2008. 'I am Santa Monica' is an interactive program designed to encourage and
empower Santa Monica businesses and their employees to become better informed
about Santa Monica and all it has to offer. The program consists of a 3-hour
training workshop and fun bus tour of Santa Monica to inform and
educate participants about Santa Monica. Trained individuals become
“Information Ambassadors” and are armed with a database of facts, figures, and
“Did You Know” anecdotes about Santa Monica for use in customer interaction. The
free workshops are offered weekly (Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and select
Saturdays) and are held at the Santa Monica College Madison Camp.

Singing it

Monica's newest contract postal unit (or CPU), a station or branch operated by a
contractor, typically in a store or other place of business. These in-store CPUs
offer a wide range of U.S. Postal Service products and services at the same
prices found in traditional Post Offices. CPU's are designed to provide more
customer service, increase Postal products and services in the area and decrease
lines at the local Post Office.

Toots & the Maytals
The legendary Toots & the Maytals perform on the Santa Monica Pier during the 24th Annual Twilight Dance Series on Thursday, Aug 29, 2008. Toots and the Maytals are credited with coining the word "Reggae" on their 1968 single "Do the Reggay." Until that time Reggay was a dance fad in Jamaica and was not associated with the style of music played by bands we now consider Reggae musicians. Toots and the Maytals, originally called simply The Maytals, are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Their sound is a unique, original combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock. Toots & The Maytals “Light Your Light” was nominated for Grammy for Best Reggae Album 2007.

Russ Mullen and the Jazz Associates
Russ Mullen and the Jazz Associates perform during City of Santa Monica's 3rd Annual Jazz on the Lawn on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at City Hall. Mullen has not only excelled as a musician, but also as a teacher and inspiration to youth in Santa Monica. He teaches full-time at John Adams Middle School and directs the John Adams Middle School Jazz Band and Jazz Workshop in Santa Monica – work for which he has been honored by the California State Legislature and the City of Santa Monica. A natural talent, Mullen started playing the piano when he was four years old, the trumpet in junior high and he taught himself the other brass instruments shortly thereafter. By the time he was in high school he was playing professionally.

Better Angels
Legendary actor Dustin Hoffman (C), James Cromwell (R) and Amy Ryan (L) act in

Performing Arts Center on Sunday, August 24, 2008. In Wayne Peter Liebman’s,
Better Angels, the year is 1863, just two years before the Civil War came
to a close at the Appomattox Court House. Abraham Lincoln is in the White House,
and of course every day is riddled with plights and horrors from the war.
However, a widow comes to the White House with a petition for a hospital to be
built in the North for wounded soldiers. While he feels that the widow appeals
to his “better angels”, Lincoln knows the road will be long and difficult due to
his Union generals being in opposition to a Northern hospital. With the war
raging on and becoming more grotesque every day, Lincoln is forced to reconsider
the situation when he hears of the horrors of The Battle of Chickamauga Creek
where 35,000 men were killed and wounded. An inaugural gala featuring Barbara Cook is scheduled for September 20.

Sacred Cat of Burma
Lorna Malinen judges Russpurrz Elmo, a one year-four month old Birman (Sacred Cat of Burma) during the
42nd Annual CFA All Breed Cat Show at the Santa Monica Civic on Sunday, August
24, 2008. Elmo won a 10th Best Allbreed, another 10th Best Allbreed, a 5th Best
Allbreed, a 7th Best Allbreed, and a 6th Best Longhair. There were 53 cats
entered in Premiership (spays and neuters) and he was 8th highest scoring cat
out of those 53 cats! There were 8 judges, and 5 of the 8 gave him awards. Elmo
is presently ranked #1 for his breed in premiership in USA. Elmo lives in
Seattle, Washington with his owner J. Kathleen Huge.

Moon Jelly

Appreciation Celebration on Sunday, August 24, 2008. Ocean Appreciation Celebration marks the debut of an exhibit featuring a
180-gallon jelly kreisel, a circular tank specially designed to protect the
delicate structure of the approximately 40 moon jellies on display. Moon jelly
are probably the most common and widely recognized type of jellyfish. They can
be found in the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Oceans near the coasts. The animal
ranges in size from 5cm to 40cm across. The moon jelly is easily recognizable by
its four violet or pink crescent shaped gonads on the underside and at the
center of its translucent bell or umbrella. Like many other species of
jellyfish, the moon jelly’s ability to move by itself is limited, so it is
subjected to the water currents of the ocean.
