(1) Kalea Power, 12, rides the "Surf Sensation"  during Santa Monica Civic Auditorium's 50th anniversary celebration on Saturday, August 9, 2008. (2) Spring A.M. de Haviland is not much of a surfer but  gave it her best. (3) Kaylani Parks, 10, (left) and Erin Power, 10, pose for a free photo on the very same stage where rock legends Elton John, the Clash, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen performed.  (4) Tropical Paradise Dancers from Orange County, Sharon Moffatt (left) and Laura DeGuire (right) entertain guests with a performance of a traditional Hawaiian hula dance. (5) Legendary filmmaker Bruce Brown (right) discusses his 1964 film, "The Endless Summer," with his fan Ray Allen. (6) Guests watch a free outdoor screening of the classic surf film, “The Endless Summer,” with an introduction by special guest filmmaker Bruce Brown. As a venue for surf movies since its opening, the auditorium played a role in Southern California’s surfing culture. The Surfing Heritage Foundation celebrated that rich history with an exhibit.  Academy Award and Rock and Roll historical memorabilia from the Civic’s archives were also displayed.

Festival of Chariots


Raj Pardefhi, 27,  hand-pulls  three fully decorated, four-story chariots south on Main Street during the 32th Annual  Festival of Chariots on Sunday, August 3, 2008. The festival celebrates Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the Universe, and is put on by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The Festival of the Chariots is now performed in every country across the world and dates back 5 thousand  years to Jagannatha Puri, India.

Children look at the altar during Edison Language Academy's  Fifth Annual Day of the Dead Exhibit on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrating and honoring the lives of the deceased, and celebrating the continuation of life; the belief is not that death is the end, but rather the beginning of a new stage in life. Día de los Muertos dates back 3000 years.

1) Annie Thimmes, 25, serves Adham El Sherif, 20, a thirty-cent order of a Burger and Fries on Sunday, July 29, during the “1934 Day” Anniversary Celebration at The Galley Restaurant and Bar on Main Street. The Galley is Santa Monica's oldest restaurant and bar dating back to 1934. During the 74th Year Anniversary, prices were rolled back to that of 1934 when the restaurant first opened. 2) Patrons wait in line on Main Street for The Galley's  74th Year Anniversary.
