(4) Santa Monica Councilmember Bobby Shriver holds the Flame of Hope™ for the Special Olympics at the Santa Monica Pier. -- The Flame of Hope began its journey on November 12, 2008, with a lighting ceremony in Athens, Greece. In accordance with Olympic tradition dating back to the Ancient Greeks, the Special Olympics' torch was lit by the sun's rays near Olympia, Greece and will remain lit until the end of the World Winter Games on February 13. After the lighting ceremony, the flame embarked on a three-month journey, traveling more than 37,000 miles via DHL by air and ground to 13 cities across five continents, delivering a message of hope to communities where people with intellectual disability continue to fight for acceptance and a chance to excel without barriers.The flame will complete its global journey January 29, when it reaches Idaho, USA to begin the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg. It will be run through scores of cities in Idaho, carried by a 132-person team, including 10 Special Olympics athletes, before arriving in Boise, where it will ignite the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony of the 2009 World Winter Games on February 7.

National Danish Performance Team
The National Danish Performance Team performs to an all-school assembly at John Adams Middle School (JAMS) on Thursday, Jan 15, 2008. The show included high-energy gymnastics & dance, breath-taking acrobatics, and unique Danish artistry from a group of 14 women and 14 men aged between 20-28. This is the first U.S. stop on a 10-month, 18-country world-wide tour for the Danish Team.

Swimmers run into the chilly Pacific Ocean during the 49th Annual Venice Penguin Swim on New Years Day-Thursday, January 1, 2009, at the Venice Beach Breakwater. The 2009 Penguin Swim featured more than 80 participants, three-foot waves, and sunny 56° degree weather, with a water temperature of 54°degrees.




Jog-a-thon
John Muir Elementary School students run during the 5th annual jog-a-thon on Thursday, December 4, 2008. The 325 students ran 7,148 laps and drank 50 gallons of water during the jog-a-thon and raised more than $15,000.00. The proceeds will directly benefit the students at John Muir Elementary School by funding science, art, technology, and field trips.
