Two men play chess during a rainy day at Santa Monica Chess Park on Sunday, January 6, 2008. The public chess park is located at Ocean Front Walk (south of the Pier) at Seaside Terrace. It has 14 large tables with (4) chess boards per table, 10 small tables with (1) chess board per table and a human-scale chessboard set into the sidewalk. Although level of play is generally high and the overall tone fairly serious, open tables are free for public use, and observers are always welcome.

Malin Svensson, (wearing blue) president of Malins Method,  takes her class through some walking drills on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at Crescent Bay Park. One of the most effective activities for burning calories and building cardio-vascular fitness is cross-country skiing because both large upper and lower body muscles are fully engaged. Imagine learning a technique, for all fitness levels, where you can achieve similar benefits year round, without snow, and without increased perceived exertion! Nordic Walking is regular walking made up to 40% more effective by the use of specifically designed hand-held Nordic Walker® poles.
