In honor of the 38th anniversary of Earth Day, the 'Superbroke Brass and Tin and Strings Electric Marching Band Ensemble Manifesto' perform at the Third Street Promenade during "Earth Day at the Promenade" on Saturday, April 12, 2008. The entire Promenade between Broadway and Wilshire was transformed into a FREE EcoFest with 90 fascinating exhibits. Earth Day is intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the  Earth's environment.

Orang Utan Republik

Inggriani Shapiro, Co-Founder of the Orang Utan Republik  Education Initiative, escorts a full size adult male orangutan mascot along the Third Street Promenade on Saturday, March 8, 2008, during the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce's Third Annual Nonprofit Festival. The adult male orangutan has not yet been named. The Orang Utan Republik will continue to seek out names until June 30th and a committee will select the best name. Community members are encouraged to visit their booth each Sunday at the Farmer's Market (Ocean Park & Main from 10am-1pm) to suggest names.

Prop makers Paul Pearson (owner of Studio Manufacturing) and Jason Angalet, put the final touch on Zap Xebra, an electric car that has been made to resemble a helicopter on Wednesday, January 2008. The car will be featured at the 2008 Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco between January 14 - 18, 2008.

1,2,3) Swimmers run into the chilly Pacific Ocean during the 48th Annual Venice Penguin Swim on New Years Day-Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at the Venice Beach Breakwater.  The 2008 Penguin Swim featured more than 80 participants, three-foot waves, and sunny 70-degree weather, with a water temperature of 55 degrees. 4) Bridget King, 23, (left) and Amanda Viola, 18, (right) bare  the cold water tempature of winter Pacific Ocean. 5) Chappie DeHaven, 38, swims ahead of the pack and wins this years 400 yard Venice Penguin Swim race with a time of five minutes and ten seconds. 6) The Venice Penguin Swim club dates back to 1958.
