1) Santa Monica Council Member Kevin McKeown admires a cake made in the image of a Big Blue Bus at the Third Street Promenade on Monday, April 14, 2008, during Big Blue Bus' 80th Anniversary Celebration. The Big Blue Bus operates a fleet of over 200 energy efficient vehicles transporting more than 80,000 passengers daily across a nearly 52-square mile service area. Nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to a cleaner environment, the entire fleet operates on alternative fuels, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), which helps cut emissions by over 80 percent. Serving Santa Monica and the Los Angeles area since 1928, the Big Blue Bus has an 86 percent on-time performance record, and has won numerous awards for its customer service, safety and efficiency. BBB is one of the oldest bus systems in California; fleet has traveled over 778 million miles since 1928. Transit agency began with six rented buses and 5 cent fares.

1) Santa Monica Police Lieutenant Clinton Muir speaks after receiving the  Rotary Club of Santa Monica's 2008 Public Service Recognition Award at the Riviera Country Club on Friday, April 11, 2008. The three other honorees at the Public Recognition Day were: Paul Casey, Senior Transit Program Analyst from Big Blue Buss, Captain Mark Bridges from the Santa Monica Fire Department and Irma Lyons, Principle from Will Rogers Learning Community. 2) SMPD Chief Timothy J. Jackman presents Lieutenant Clinton Muir with the 2008 Public Service Recognition Award. 3) Santa Monica Fire Chief Jim Hone presents Captain Mark Bridges with the 2008 Public Service Recognition Award. 4) Santa Monica Malibu Unified School Superintendent Dianne Talarico presents Irma Lyons with the 2008 Public Service Recognition Award. 5) Big Blue Bus General Manager Stephanie Negriff presents Paul Casey with the 2008 Public Service Recognition Award. Each toy car represents one million gallons of gasoline) (5) Exhibit Three: Vintage Big Blue (Each blue thumbtack represents one million gallons of gasoline saved by public transit) (6) Exhibit Four: How To Be Green - Elements of Recycling (All object used in art piece were collected at local recycling centers. Artwork was painted in yellow and blue because when combined makes green)

MAKE A NEW PLAN: Santa Monica College president Dr. Chui L. Tsang, encourages students to ride the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus to the SMC campus during the EcoFabulous Event on Tuesday, April 24, 2007.  Dr. Tsang, said that there are plans in the works to offer free rides on the Big Blue Bus for SMC students.  The event  featured an environmental fair, speakers, free organic food and prizes and the release of the 2005-06 SMC Environmental Audit. The event was  sponsored by the SMC Associated Students, SMC Center for Environmental and Urban Studies, SMC Eco-Action Club and Sustainable Works. Speakers included SMC president Dr. Chui L. Tsang, Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom, Santa Monica City Councilman Kevin McKeown and keynote speaker Paul Scott, who talked about the benefits of solar energy.

Hop on the bus

Maintenance supervisor from the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Getty Modica, 43, and Randy Cannon, 53 from maintenance department,  applies a 3M decorative material onto the Big Blue Bus # 3816 on Monday. The bus is being decorated in a holiday theme called, "Reindeers going to the Beach." The bus runs on liquefied Natural Gas and expels 80% less pollution  than diesel fuel. Bill Figueroa, 55, a transportation mechanic for Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, fills up a bus with 'natural gas.' The bus can hold about 210 gallons and can travel up to 300 miles on a tank full. Natural gas is  cooled down to a minus 260 degrees to become liquid. Special precautions must be made to avoid skin contact that can result in severe burns.
