Artist Susan Weinberg teaches a plein-air  watercolor painting class to a group of senior citizens from the Santa Monica College Emeritus at Santa Monica Beach on Wednesday, July 11, 2007. En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting in the outside environment rather than indoors (such as in a studio).

Malin Svensson, (center) president of Nordic Walking US, takes her class through some walking drills on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at Santa Monica Beach. One of the most effective activities for burning calories and building cardio-vascular fitness is cross-country skiing because both large upper and lower body muscles are fully engaged. Imagine learning a technique, for all fitness levels, where you can achieve similar benefits year round, without snow, and without increased perceived exertion! Nordic Walking is regular walking made up to 40% more effective by the use of specifically designed hand-held Nordic Walker® poles.

George Rieck, 68, prepares his soil before planting his spring tomatoes garden and waters his African daiseis  at the Main Street Community Garden on Tuesday, March 20, 2007,  marking the first day of spring  and the Vernal Equinox. The equinox occurs when the Earth's position on its axis, as it waltzes around the sun, places the sun directly over the Earth's equator. Day and night are of approximately equal length at 12 hours each. The hours of daylight peak around June 20, which is called the Summer Solstice, called the time when the sun stands still. The sun is again directly over the equator around, September 22, marking the Automnal Equinox.
